I have lived with two kids that have autism. One was high functioning autism/asperger's and he is the brightest and coolest kid I have ever known. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is wise way beyond his years. Another was more advanced autism and my mother took care of him in her home daycare when I was in high school. I still think back fondly of him and the kindness and intelligence in his eyes.
I would love to have my own kids someday, and it is a scary thought at the same time. But I don't feel autism is something that should be scary or negative. In a lot of ways people with autism are more true and interesting than a lot of us.

Re: My feelings and experiences
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 6:45 PMI am a child welfare worker, and I have had experiences working with families who have children with autism. I don't think of it as anything that should be negative or scary either. You just have to learn how to parent and communicate with those children in whatever way works best with them and meets their needs. Autism is more prevalent these days (1 in 150 now?) that it is likely one of my children or nieces or nephews may be born with autism. We should all be more aware of autism.
