Hi,
My name is Rachel. My son Sequoia is challenging the system, as those of us who are
unique always do. He is beautiful and creative. His teacher is cool. We talk a lot. He
is open to suggestions. I think that the school system for spectrum children should
be planned by and include adults with autism or at least have the influence of people
who understand the minds of children with autism a bit better. I always ask at our
annual IEP meetings if anybody has asked the adult autistic community for guidance,
since they seem to be guessing at what Sequoia and his classmates need to be the best
that they can be. What do you think?

Re: Education
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 10:59 AMAsk the Autistic community to represent itself~? Blasphemy~! Heresy~! Autistics must be marginalized, misrepresented and forcefully "cured", then finally made into soap and lampshades. Bitter sarcasm aside, though, I agree with you wholeheartedly. -

Re: Education

Re: Education
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 12:23 PMFor once thing, I would not have wanted to be in a room with many people. Loud noise and bright lights would probably have killed me. However, finding the right environment and structure for Autistic folks is like herding cats. The best thing for parents, educators and teachers to do is to take the kids seriously when they say they're overwhelmed.
I also wished I was taught differently when I was seven. I absolutely hated math back then, because the right method wasn't used to teach me. Mind you, I didn't know what the right method was; I only knew that the one that was being used wasn't working. Again, this is why it's important to hear the children rather than just seeing them. As simplistic as that answer was, I hope it was of some help to you, because such a good question does deserve a helpful answer. -

Re: Education
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 5:45 PMThank you for sharing your insights. You're reminding me of myself as a child, and actually right now. I get the feeling from Sequoia when it's all a bit too much for him by the way he amps himself up to cover it. I try to hear him. I believe in his right as a being to be himself in this world. We are all here together and as perfect as can be with things appearing to be as they are. thank you and please share more insights as they come. I admire and adore you! So honest and real!
