Hi, first I will introduce myself....I'm Rosita from Holland,( so there will be typos...and please don't use to much difficult words for me, I'll try to understand) I have a 5 year old son, who is born premature, with 26 weeks of pregnancy...He's been in the Hospital for 4 month's before he could come home, during his stay he got loads om med's to help him survive, the med's did do some damage to him brain, but he's turn out fine.
He's going to school now, and now the teacher want's to test him on ( hope i translate it ok) on a disabillity in the spectrum of autism....
I was really shocked!!! I admitt there are some things that could be autism related, he has a lot of fantasy, but he now's the difference between a fairytaile and reality, He's really social, he loves talking to everone, but he does not go with strangers, And he is a slow learner, but not in extreem.
He looks everyone in the eye, Not all the time but normal. He does now a lot about disney movies, but he is deffinatly not a walking enceclopie.....
All the people I know, are as shocked as I am, theyre like ; no way' Noah is not Autism!
I would like to know what you think. He has friends hey plays, he just can't read and write, but he's 5 and a half and born way to early! are they using the term 'dissabillity in the spectrum of autism' too soon???
I'm getting him tested.
No matter what I love him to death, he's all i've got. And he is really the sweetest kid alive, so there for I want to provide him with the best care he needs, but I'm also afraid he's diagnosed to early.....
Every checklist i do, he has one ore two, matches.....
And how does live look like in the future? On every site i see, there a messages of that people with Autism can't live on their own, and can't have relationships....
I'm ofcourse a little scared......

What you describe of him doesn't sound all that autistic, but diagnoses are more and more common, and Autism is the disability de jour (meaning that it's sort of the new bandwagon to jump on - 10 years ago it was ADHD, now its autism), so I'm not surprised that a teacher has thought that a slow learner in her classroom should be evaluated. Better to have him evaluated when there's nothing to worry about than NOT have him evaluated when he really needs help, right?

Either way, autistic or not, it doesn't change the little guy that you know and love, and there is nothing at all to be afraid of. If he is given a diagnosis of autism, it doesn't shorten his life expectancy or reduce the quality of life that he is already enjoying. If he was difficult to deal with, like many autistic children can be, you would know it already, and you would love him anyway, regardless of the extra work he might cause for you as his parent. And an autism diagnosis might come as something of a relief, because it would mean that the school system would have to address any issues he might have with sensory defensiveness and speech or language issues. It would mean extra help for both of you.

So relax, don't worry. Autism is far from a death sentence, and even if he is on the spectrum, it doesn't change him one bit. You're gonna be okay.

      Thanks, I understand it.
Whats the difference between in the spectrum and autism? He is not autistic diagonosed, but probebly in the spectrum....

Well, it's called the autistic spectrum, meaning that there are many "flavors" of autism. Some people think of it as the severity of the individual's autism, i.e. some people are severely impacted by it because it impairs their language skills or fine motor functions, etc so dramatically; whereas others simply appear to be a little socially awkward or have a hard time with eye contact.

When people refer to a "spectrum disorder" or "the spectrum", they are generally referring to autism, and in many cases they are interchangeable. I think that some people may say "on the spectrum" when referring to a less severe, or less debilitating flavor of autism.

But on the whole, the terms are generally synonymous.
