It may not seem like a big thing to most people. But, my eight yr old son can read. Those of you who know me, know that my oldest, Nicky, is Autistic. Up until tonight, I thought that his obsession with books and magazines was just for pictures and numbers, but tonight when I was reading a Blue's Clues book to him, he just started to read the words to me BEFORE I could read them to him. AND HE WAS GETTING 80% OF THEM RIGHT!! And more than likely most of this is self taught. I am just blown away, and damn it's difficult typing through these tears.

Ah, man, RK! Wow. That is SO cool! I'm very happy for you and your boy. Reading opens up anybody's world, and to have an autistic son, heck, any son, show their capabilities in that regard is indeed a most excellent thing.

I was going to unsubscribe to this tribe, not because I didn't like it, but because I didn't have a lot of business here. Your post has made me see a bit of sunshine in an otherwise dreary couple of days and so I think I'll stay and set a bit.

    happy happy.

Congratulations, RK. My son still doesn't speak, but I know he can read certain things, identifiable words on the DVD player and TiVo menues, for instance, but I can't even imagine how beside myself I'd be if he just started reading out of a book like that. That's awesome. :-)

Hey, Heather, that's kinda how I learned to read. I started reading off the spines of books. It wasn't long until I actually opened one up and read it. If, in a year or two, he can read Victorian literature, don't be too surprised.

Congratulations to your son!!!!!! My own little guy is working on reading too - he loves to watch subtitles on the TV and looking through books. He can point to words in a website description to tell me which one he'd like to visit. It truly amazes me what our kids are capable of - and especially exciting when they share it with us! =-) That's so wonderful for you - congratulations again!!!
